Annual GCO cup 8-a-side football tournament in Oman

The draw for the annual GCO cup 8-a-side football tournament, to be played on coming Friday, 13th Nov 2009 at the Oman Club grounds, Al Khuwair, was held at the Majan Intercontinental Hotel on 9th November, 2009. The draw for the tournament was well attended by the team captains and players, and conducted by the members of the GCO (Goan Community of Oman). In all twelve teams will participate in the day-long fun-filled event. The teams have been divided into four groups, who will play on a round-robin and knock-out basis. Group A comprises of Saligao, FC siolim, St. Francis Xavier, Group B : CBD boys, AIG, Black & White Kerala Group C : Ave Maria, St. Anne's, Navelim & Group D : Chinchinim, Beach Boys & Curtorim. The draw was held in the presence of the Mr. Flynn de Lima, (President), Mr. Celso Fernandes (Vice President), Dr. Mario de Souza (General Secretary) and other GCO members.


The football tournament will be a whole day affair, packed with surprises and spot prizes for children and spectators. In the evening there will be ladies 3-a-side tie-breaker. All Goans in Oman and football lovers are invited to join in the fun, along with their families.


The most special feature of this year's event will be the presence of Goa's and India's ace goalkeeper, Mr. Brahmanand Shankwalkar who will be the chief guest of the day. Recipient of the Arjuna Award, Brahmanand has represented India from 1976 to 1986, and as captain from 1983 to 1986. Specially flown in from Goa by the GCO, Brahmanand is very keen to share his experiences with the football lovers in Oman, especially the Youth. All efforts are being made by the organizers to hold special sessions for the students of the Indian Schools in Oman. The tournament will begin with a colourful march past at 8 a.m. prior to the kick off, and the final match is scheduled at 8 p.m.
