In a rare show of unity, members at the gram sabha of Colva panchayat, passed three resolutions, unanimously. The gram sabha was held in front of the Colva panchayat building and the three resolutions passed were pertaining to the proposal of construction of water channels and de-silting of two lakes, Daktem Tollem and Vodlem Tollem, and building of sluice gates; the construction of 24-hour Health Centre promoted by NRI office and Colva United Centre, based in Kuwait; and the third was construction of an electricity power sub-station.

While the first resolution was moved on behalf of Tenants Association of Teleband and Socklivand of Sernabatim by Mr Jovek Cardozo, the second resolution was jointly moved by Alexandre M Fernandes, the former president of Colva United Centre, Kuwait and Dr Robinson Costa, while the third resolution was moved by Mr Carmo Rodrigues. The panchayat body as well as the gram sabha unanimously adopted these public interest resolutions and in fact congratulated the gram sabha members for bringing in good proposals that will help in upliftment and progress of Colva village.

Speaking at length while moving the resolution for the construction of water channels and desilting of lakes and also some ponds in Sernabatim area, Mr Cardozo said that the Sernabatim ward has two lakes with sluice gates connected to the narrow water channels to supply water to all the fields in the area. He said the farmers use the sluice gates to regulate and control the flow of water.

It was pointed out that rain water is stored in these lakes with the help of the sluice gates, and later utilised for irrigation for the summer crop.

It was further pointed out that the water channels are supported by thick mounds of mud on either side, which at times collapse, causing water logging which in turn leads to the rotting of the crop. It was therefore pleaded to construct concrete water channels and also protect the sluice gates.

Similarly, the second proposal of 24-hour health center, moved jointly by Dr Costa and Mr Fernandes also received large acceptance, keeping in view the need to take care of the heath of the villagers. Mr Fernandes was publicly congratulated for even making arrangements of funds for this project. This project will be managed and run by the Health Department, provided the panchayat allots proper land for the construction of this project. Mr Fernandes asked the panchayat to allot any land available at the panchayat’s disposal.

The third resolution of having a power sub-station at Colva was also accepted, though a lady gram sabha member tried to belittle the need of such a substation, saying that such sub-station would be of no use until and unless, the panchayat knows how much electricity (power) is needed for the entire state and Colva in particular. Her objections were however overruled and the resolution was adopted, so that Colva has its own power sub-station, as is the case in Majorda and other coastal areas.

A gram sabha member named Jack, who was the former panchayat representative, wanted information on how the BPL allotments are made, and how much revenue the panchayat earns on sopo tax, and also wanted to know what steps the panchayat has taken to save some of the century old residences which are situated on the beach side, as these are said to be under the CRZ scanner.

Garbage issue was also discussed at length and the chairperson, Mr
Anthony Fernandes was heard telling that whatever needs to be done will be done in this respect, adding that the matter is now before the High Court and a discussion was not encouraged as the matter
is sub judice.

Goa is known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage worldwide. But there was also another quality of a Goan which was known all over the world. It is ‘Goenkarponn’ – in other words, ‘humanity’.
In olden times, if a person was in need of help, all the people of the village used to come to his aid. If a person had a fall on the road or anywhere else, Goans used to come immediately and lift him up. But today, in most of the cases, the situation has become such that if a person falls, Goans will not come to his aid. Some will stand and silently laugh, but won’t care to give a helping hand.
At least 70 per cent of the Goan people have lost their Goenkarponn. The concept and value of a Good Samaritan is diminishing day by day.

Every year, Our Lady of Rosary feast is celebrated in Goa on the 3rd
Wednesday of November.

:::NAVELIM CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF ROSARY:::

According to legend, the Navelim church was built in mud similar to the
other churches in Salcete Taluka, between the year 1594 to 1598. The
builders were Jesuits and it was financed by the villagers.
The first parish priest of Navelim Church was a French Jesuit named Fr. John
Sena. (Mitras Lusitanas no Oriente).
As time passed, the church became small for the growing population. Later on
it was reconstructed with laterite stones on a larger scale. The
reconstruction was apparently financed by a local merchant "Barreto" who was
saved from bankruptcy through the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary. He
financed the entire reconstruction, not only of the church but he also
renewed the statue of our Lady of Rosary.

:::NAVELIM FEAST:::

The celebration of the feast of Our Lady of Rosary begins every third
Wednesday in November. This devotion of Our Lady comprises of an extensive
celebration.

:::NAVELIM FAIR:::

According to legend, in earliest times, this fair consisted mainly of three
or four sheds and lasted only for a day.
DR. FRANCISCO SALVADOR GOMES, father of Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes, who was
the administrator of Salcete, encouraged some of the owners of the sheds to
extend the fair for three days. This was done, and the fair gained in
prominence. Today it is one of the most popular fairs in Goa.

Team AIG (Anjuna International Group) emerged the proud winners of the GCO Football Tournament organized by the Goan Community of Oman on 13th November 2009, edging out Saligao Sporting in an exciting final played at the Oman Club grounds, Al Khuwair.



The tournament opened with a colourful march past by all the participating teams. It was a grand spectacle organized by the tournament committee, in a real professional manner. The sportsman prayer was read by master Noel Vas. The “Beach Boys” was adjudged the best dressed team. The tournament was officially declared open by Flynn de Lima, GCO President by releasing balloons along with the chief guest, Brahmanand Shankwalkar, ex Indian team captain and goalkeeper.



During the league matches, there were major upsets: Favourites like Navelim and CBD boys made early exits. AIG defeated the Beach Boys and FC Siolim in the semis via the tie breaker, while Saligao trounced St. Anne’s and then beat the fancied Black n white Kerala team in the semis, also via the tie breaker. The highlight of the tournament was a fine hatrick by Savio of Saligao against St. Anne’s.



In the evening a tie-breaker tournament for ladies was held, which along with the tug-of-war for women and men, elicited much excitement. Many spot prizes, sponsored by Nawras, were given throughout the day. Brahmanand shared some tips with budding footballers and met each of the participating teams in their respective tents. The band “Cross Connections” kept the crowd in a dancing mood with great music during the evening break.



The finals was a see-saw battle between AIG and Saligao, with both teams exhibiting great soccer with Noel Fernandes as the referee. The game had to be finally decided via a tie-breaker, which went into the second set. Moin of AIG was declared best player of the finals while Sibon Soares of FC Siolim won the player of the tournament award. The best goalkeeper of the tournament was awarded to Azad of B&W Kerala, while the best upcoming player went to Ryan of CBD Boys. Chinchinim won the best disciplined team.


There was a large turnout of Goans, all of whom were in a festive mood. The guests for the finals and prize-distribution ceremony included Brahmanand Shankwalkar, Arjuna Awardee, Flynn de Lima, Celso Fernandes, Dr. Mario de Souza, Baltazar Fernandes and others GCO managing committee members. Brahmanand Shankwalkar was presented with a memento on behalf of the GCO. During the vote of thanks, Mr. Anthony Lourence appreciated the leadership taken by Dominic Fernandes in organizing this tournament and the support extended by other GCO football enthusiasts. He thanked the sponsors Profab/Vanguard, Pepsi, Majan Hotel, Talentz, Techrock Muna Noor, Michael and Selwyn.



The next day Brahmanand held sessions with young aspiring football players of the Indian Schools, Muscat and Al Ghubra. He answered their queries and gave them tips and advice about football. Brahmanand, who himself played for Salgaocar in the club championships in Muscat in 1990, was delighted to be back in Muscat after 20 years, and thanked the organizers for their support.

IT WAS the first objective, the first test of character, the beginning of a long road ahead, as the Gold International Award Participants from The British School of Kuwait (BSK) departed for Goa. Here they would spend a week in a foreign, unknown, yet intriguing environment; caring for orphans at the Al Shaddai orphanages in Goa, India. Prior to departure, there was a lot of planning and preparation for the trip. This year, the young adults wanted to donate old clothes, toys and books as gifts for the orphans which the BSK school community had given so generously. Thanks to the sponsorship of Jet Airways 500kg in excess baggage was delivered free of charge to the needy children at the orphanage.

On arrival it was comforting to witness the International Award spirit radiate as every-one got straight to work.

Throughout the week, the students under took several tasks such as cleaning, painting and decorating in many of the homes which were located around Goa, from the middle of the jungle, to the heart of the slums. Some students taught at the school. It was a joyous experience for the BSK group and many were overcome by the joy emanating from those who had experienced (and continued to experience) great pain and poverty in their lives. "It is beautiful to see how people can have so little yet enjoy life so much" said Cyrus Moosavinia, a Gold Award Participant at BSK.

The week proved to be an interesting and enjoyable experience for all with so many valuable 'life skills' learned. For all who visited Goa, the trip changed their perspective on the world around us; it has made them see the world differently and see how a small act of kindness can change a person's life forever, even something as simple as a smile or a conversation.

The week from November 14 to November 20 will be celebrated as the National Book Week all over the country. Institute Menezes Braganza has also arranged a book exhibition from November 14 to 20 at the Menezes Braganza Hall.

Apart from the book exhibition other programmes like kavi sammelans, reading competitions, lectures, etc, have been arranged and readers, poets and writers are invited to participate in the programme.
On November 14 at 4.30 p.m. the Chief Secretary, Government of Goa and Chairman (IMB), Mr Sanjay Shrivastav will inaugurate the exhibition. In this book exhibition, the National Book Trust of India and about 15 other booksellers from Goa and outside will participate. After the inauguration Mr Anil Samant will deliver a lecture on the topic ‘Vachakachi Badalti Abhiruchi’.
On November 15 at 4.30 p.m. there will be a programme on the views of the Bal Shree Awardees. On November 16 at 4.30 p.m. Adv Uday Bhembre will deliver a lecture on Dr Rammanohar Lohiya on the topic ‘Lohiyancho Samajik Drishticon’.
On November 17 at 4.30 p.m. there will be a Konkani Poetry Recital. Prof Yeshwant Suman from Puna will deliver a lecture on Dr Rammanohar Lohiya on the topic `Samakalin Bahujan Vadache Swarup ani Lohiyanche Rajakiya Vichar’ on November 18 at 4:30 p.m.
There will be a reading competition for students of the higher secondary on November 19 at 10 a.m.
On November 20 at 4.30 p.m. there will be Marathi poetry recitals. Dr Y B Sutar (Chitrasenshabab) will be the president of the function. Participants for the function are Ms Sapana Dhupkar, Ms Shanta Lagu, Ms Poornima Kerkar, Ms Radha Bhave, Mr Nilesh Bude, Mr Arun Naik, Mr Prakash Dhumal, Mr Suresh Bhandari, Mr Avdhut Kurtarkar and Mr Shambu B Bandekar. This will be followed by the valedictory function.

Annual GCO cup 8-a-side football tournament in Oman

The draw for the annual GCO cup 8-a-side football tournament, to be played on coming Friday, 13th Nov 2009 at the Oman Club grounds, Al Khuwair, was held at the Majan Intercontinental Hotel on 9th November, 2009. The draw for the tournament was well attended by the team captains and players, and conducted by the members of the GCO (Goan Community of Oman). In all twelve teams will participate in the day-long fun-filled event. The teams have been divided into four groups, who will play on a round-robin and knock-out basis. Group A comprises of Saligao, FC siolim, St. Francis Xavier, Group B : CBD boys, AIG, Black & White Kerala Group C : Ave Maria, St. Anne's, Navelim & Group D : Chinchinim, Beach Boys & Curtorim. The draw was held in the presence of the Mr. Flynn de Lima, (President), Mr. Celso Fernandes (Vice President), Dr. Mario de Souza (General Secretary) and other GCO members.


The football tournament will be a whole day affair, packed with surprises and spot prizes for children and spectators. In the evening there will be ladies 3-a-side tie-breaker. All Goans in Oman and football lovers are invited to join in the fun, along with their families.


The most special feature of this year's event will be the presence of Goa's and India's ace goalkeeper, Mr. Brahmanand Shankwalkar who will be the chief guest of the day. Recipient of the Arjuna Award, Brahmanand has represented India from 1976 to 1986, and as captain from 1983 to 1986. Specially flown in from Goa by the GCO, Brahmanand is very keen to share his experiences with the football lovers in Oman, especially the Youth. All efforts are being made by the organizers to hold special sessions for the students of the Indian Schools in Oman. The tournament will begin with a colourful march past at 8 a.m. prior to the kick off, and the final match is scheduled at 8 p.m.

Salgaocar Sports (Goa) competed at MUPC 2009 in Manchester

For all Goan football enthusiasts, you will be interested to know that our very own
Salgaocars from Goa qualified to participate in the Manchester United Premier Cup
(MUPC) football tournament which took place from August 5th to 7th at Carrington
(private training ground for Manchester United team).

Fortunately for me, the Coach, Francisco Bruto da Costa, is a good friend of my
family, who informed me of the arrival and participation of Salgaocars in this
prestigious tournament.

Knowing very little about this tournament, I asked for full details and it is
interesting to note that this tournament was founded in 1993 for under 15s as part
of their program to promote and scout for young talent from around the world. This
year over 43 countries participated at Manchester. To name a few - UK, France,
Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Ghana, China etc. This was an opportunity for teams
to play at international level and share the experience of bridging language and
cultural barriers through sports

This is the fourth year that All India Football Federation (AIFF) in collaboration
with Nike, (world's leading designer of authentic athletic footwear, apparel &
equipment for sports) has been sending a side from India to participate at the MUPC
event. To qualify for the event, a local tournament was held from 11th November 2008
to December 3rd 2008. The following teams - Mahindra United FC, JCT, Pune FC, Viva
Kerala, Salgaocar Sports Club, Sporting Club De Goa, Sikkim Football Academy,
Silchar Football Academy, Mumbai Sports School Association, Pondicherry Coaching
Centre and Uttaranchal participated in the tournamnent.

At the finals (In India) our very own boys played under the banner of the famous
brand 'Salgoacars' and defeated Raghav FC of Gurgaon (Haryana) to make it for the
first time at the MUPC tournament at Manchester.

The Salgaocar team arrived in Manchester prior to the tournament and all
international teams were accommodated at Fallowfield Campus, Manchester University.

The MUPC event kicked off with the opening ceremony followed by a draw at Carrington
on Tuesday 4th August 2009. The guests of honour officiating were Sir Alex
Ferguson, (Manchester United Manager) Sir Bobby Charlton (former professional
football player who won the World Cup in '66) and Rio Ferdinand (defender and
Captain of Manchester United).

Because this event did not attract much attention in the press, it is quite possible
that very few are aware of this wonderful news. I attended the tournament and was
very impressed with the skills and energy of the under 15s. The matches were
exciting to say the least and very competitive and the finals were held on Saturday
8th August 2009 at Old Trafford also known as the "Theatre of Dreams", where Sao
Paulo (Brazilians) defeated Werder Bremen (Germans) to lift the Manchester United
Premier Cup trophy. The score was 3:1.

Even though Salgoacars finished 20th. I must say that they put in their very best
despite the odds of playing against very superior teams. Our boys however, are
very pleased with this exposure at the international level as it provided them a
platform to measure their skills, passion and determination against the very best of
peers. Congratulations to our young boys for making it this far and definitely
putting Goa in the map of international events.

Francisco Bruto da Costa. (the coach) was all praise for the Management of the
Salgaocar Club who provides all facilities to their members for promoting talent at
the grass root level. The cooperation and support from parents, schools and
officials creates a very congenial atmosphere for development of this sport. (ENDS)

India's Jazz Legend Braz Gonsalves, a host of Goa's renowned musicians and 'the
Herald of the Gospel, the inspirational Brazilian Congregation are all set to rock
the stage with, "MARY, the Chosen one", a Musical Evening on Saturday, October 31,
2009, 6.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m., on Fr. Agnel School Ground, Pilar.

The entire three hour evening is designed in ten Acts on the life of Mother Mary,
which will be supported by some soul rendering musical compositions performed by Goa's
top Singers and backed by a choir of around 80 swaying singers.

A unique flag procession and veneration of the Mother Mary will be conducted by the
Brazilian Congregation, the Heralds of the Gospel. The Statue to be venerated has
the Apostolic blessings of Pope John Paul II.

Silver Elephant National Awardee, Dr. Sydney Pinto do Rosario has duly consented to
the chief guest and Mr. Christopher Gomes, Proprietor of Furtado's Goa will the
Guest of Honour.

October being the month dedicated to Our Lady, the Association of Spiritual Brothers
and Sisters along with the Goa Velha Deanery have come together to organize the
unique programme. Parking arrangements are taken care of.

The Association of the Spiritual Brothers and Sisters is a 65 year Lay Missionary
Association in Goa approved by Dom Jose da Costa Nunes, the then Archbishop of Goa
and Daman, which has been supporting missionary actives through their prayers and
financial support.

SILVER STAR - UK - MOBILE DIABETES UNIT LAUNCHED IN GOA

At a simple ceremony this hot Sunday afternoon 25th October, 2009 the first of its kind Mobile Diabetes Unit MDU of Silver Star a UK based charitable institution (www.silverstaruk.org) was launched in the 25th State of India, Goa by the world acclaimed film star Amitabh Bachchan at the Goa Hyundai showroom cum works campus at Nagoa Verna Plateau Salcete Goa India.

Speaking on the ocassion the Guest of Honour, Mr Bachchan 67 was indeed privileged to have the honour to launch the first of its kind unit in the State of Goa. He was pleased that the MP United Kingdom Mr Keith Vaz has taken the initiative to launch the third such unit in India and was happy that it was in Goa. To him Goa had a special place in his heart. He remembered his first visit to then Union Territiory in 1969 on the sets of the film Saat Hindustani and thereafter on several ocassions. After his accident which proved near fatal while shooting for the film, "Coolie" he has had more ocassions to be in the ICU then outside, he said. He was alarmed at the fact that almost every 6th Indian is a diabetic and assuming that every 6th person in the world is an Indian India could well be designated as the world capital of diabetes. Mr Bachchan requested the CM of Goa to use his services for any social cause in Goa and he would be most willing to participate in the same or contribute to whatever cause be dear to Goa and Goans.

He wished that many well wishers would come forward to contribute to the growth of Silver Star in India. Answering a query of a journalist Mr Bachchan admitted the fact that just one MDU would not suffice for the State of Goa but he was confident that with the contribution of others more such units would come up in Goa. He himself annouced a donation of Rs.11 lacs (his birth day 11th) on the ocassion as his personal contribution to the cause.

Speaking further about his love for Goa he thanked the Goans for the love and affection showered on him and his family while he was in Breach Candy Mumbai and during times his family went through bad phases. He singled out Ms Zarina Fernandes an employee of the Syndicate Bank a native of Porvorim amidst the audience who was his oldest fan in Goa. (Ms Fernandes stood up to acknowledge the handsome praise from the filmstar she got herself photographed at the request of this writer )

He was again all praise for the organisational acumen of 21 years long MP from Leicester UK Mr Keith Vaz whose parents hail from Calangute Bardez Goa. Mr Bachchan recalled the tremendous ovation he received in Leicester during his visit to UK , and attributed all this to the youthful MP.

Earlier the UK MP Mr Vaz, informed the gathering that little did he suspect that he himself would be a victim of Diabetes type II when he had gone for a casual diagnostic test at his hometown in Leicester UK. Ofcourse his mother died young as a diabetic he said. His love for Goa made him set up the third MDU in India specially in Goa, said the youthful MP who was born in Aden and informed that his wife Maria hails from Velim Salcete Goa . Speaking to this writer his wife Ms Vaz informed that they have a home also in Betalbatim Goa. He was indeed alarmed at the fact that 14 million people in India have been diagonised to be suffering from diabetes Type II and the undetected ones could be double or even more. He was full praise for the Chief Guest Mr Bachchaan and indeed had a special message to convey to Mr Bachchaan from the British PM Mr Gordon Brown who specifically requested him to convey his belated best wishes on his(Amitabhs) birthday (11/10/ 1942)to the best actor on the planet admired for his basic humanity and charitable contributions. This was greeted by a thunderous applaud. Mr Vaz thanked the Government of Goa the elected representatives and the Health Department for all the help rendered to his charity mission via the Silver Star in Goa.

The Chief Minister Mr Digamber Kamat, thanked the UK MP Mr Vaz and the film star Amitabh Bachchan for launching the MDUnit in India and making Goa the first state in India to have this unit. He recalled that his Government had indeed launched the free insulin kit just a day before in North Goa and promised all help for the success of the Silver Star charity activities in Goa.

Capt. K Nair 86 an entrepreneur in the Hotel industry an owner of Leela Goa a native of the south Indian state of Kerala a freedom fighter at the age of 13 years spelt out his love for Goa when he opened up a resort in Cavelossim on an area of 75 acres and employing over 1000 in Goa. He has fallen in love with Goa and would never leave this place he said. Capt Nair also complimented the Government of Goa the ex-CM Dr Wilfred A De Souza who was present on the ocassion, the PWD Minister Mr Churchill Alemao . So much was his love for Goa that he named the botanical garden in his Resort at Cavelossim after Mr Pratapsing Raoji Rane he informed the audience to the surprise of many.

Earlier the patron of the Silver Star Mr Nana Bandekar mine owner from Vasco-da-Gama was introduced to the dignitaries on the dais.

Sidelights of the event
a) the function started an hour late much to the annoyance of the children present to see the mega film star-- who wished for his autograph but were denied the same
b) strict frisking of the VVIP's and VIP's besides the guests annoyed the dignitaries at the entrance
c) the electronic and print media personnel too were not spared the strict frisking annoying most of them
d) there was no drinking water or refreshments, even at costs, made available at the venue even the security personnel and police who had to bear the sweltering afternoon heat were scouting for water to quench their thirst but could find little comfort.
e) the MDU was the third such unit of Silver Star the first after "George" being launched in 2008 followed by the second named after Silver star Patron "Ms Dorothy Purdew" and the present one after Patron "Capt Krishna Nair"
f) specially printed banner placards were given to the children and the gathering greeting Mr Amitabh Bacchan
g) Mr Paresh Joshi Proprietor of Goa Hyundai was thanked for the arrangements.
h) an advertisement on the local english daily TNT revealed that the invitation was meant for the public but the entry was given only to the invitees. Seeing the chairs vacant in the invitees arena those in the general arena (uninvited audience) was made to occupy the invitees/dignitaries chairs just before the function commenced.
i) the press both from the audio visual and print media occupied the front of the stage resulting in the invitees howling at them. The press retaliated because the place designated for them were occupied by the uninvited guests.
j) Rs. 100 chairty coupons were sold at the venue and Mr Sunil Gangwani was the lucky winner of a free air travel courtesy Kingfisher airlines Goa - London
